Avoiding gum disease: tips for great gum health

Next post

Sparkling-white teeth may be the star of the show, but your gums are critical behind-the-scenes players, protecting your teeth and the structures that support them. Keeping them clean and healthy should be an integral part of your oral care routine.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease begins when plaque gets underneath your gum line. The longer it stays there, the more likely it is to cause inflammation (gingivitis) or serious breakdown of bone and tissue (periodontitis).

What Are the Signs of Unhealthy Gums?

Look for red, swollen, or tender gums, loose or sensitive teeth, and gums pulling away from the teeth.

How Do I Keep My Gums Healthy?

Following excellent oral health care routines can help reverse gingivitis and prevent disease before it starts:

1. Use a rubber tip stimulator. A rubber tip, like the one that comes with your Prophix toothbrush, dislodges plaque from underneath the gum line. It also massages your gums, increasing healthy blood flow. Use it in addition to regular brushing and flossing.

2. Eat right. Focus on foods that scour away bacteria as you chew, like apples and leafy greens, calcium-boosting dairy products, and natural anti-inflammatories, like ginger and green tea.

3. Visit a dental professional. In addition to at-home routines, visit a dentist for regular check-ups and cleanings.
